Hot running in September!

It was a very HOT TN early fall meet. Saturday we had 27 adults and 4 puppies. Saturday match winner under Kitty Williams and high combined both days was Ember. Sunday match winner was Horton under Cindy. Meet winner both days was Torino. Saturday match placements were Ember, Helga, Minnie and Horton. Sunday was Horton, Minx, Ember and Minnie. Congrats to all the winners and thanks to Kitty and Cindy for judging our match.

We all survived the high heat and humidity with fans, pop ups and lots of water.  The most wonderful thing about where our meet is, is the lake! Along with the provided spray jugs and baby pool, the dog’s also could go swim in the lake. At the end of the day we would do a group swim with them to finish off a exciting day of racing. 

As always, we thank everyone for coming. We have the greatest group that comes here. We are looking forward to getting many more new people involved in the area.

It was hot hot hot!!!! After a cold winter and very cool spring, we sprang straight into TN summer. Thankfully, we are on the lake at Beale park. Though, SMART was wonderful with a cold baby pool and mister for dogs as they came off the track. Despite the searing heat, the dogs were able to recover and keep cool. We had tent city in the parking lot providing lots of shade and a hardware store of fans going in cars. Dog people are full of ingenuity!  Kim Otero came all the way from Southern California, which was a treat to have her AND her beautiful ribbons. 

Saturday our meet winner was Lovey! Our match winners were 1) Helga 2) Horton 3) Lovey  4) Batman. High combined went to Lovey. Just a side note, Lovey was handled by Naddia Talo, who is 11 years old. She did a great job presenting her.  Thank you to Pat Hodges for judging for us

Sunday our meet winner was again Lovey! Our match winners were 1) Minnie 2) Horton 3) Ember 4) Helga  High combined went to Ember! Thank you to Kristen Addington for doing a great job judging.

Saturday May 12th

I started showing dogs in 1974 with an Afghan.  In 1975 I got my first Borzoi and had them for 26 years under the kennel name of Volnyj.  I have owned and shown Afghans, Borzoi, English Springer Spaniels, Smooth Fox Terriers, Border Collies, PBGV’S, Belgian Tervurens and currently I have Miniature Dachshunds, Smooth and Wire.  I changed my kennel name to Montvue several years ago.

I was a member of Magic Valley Kennel Club and show chair along with other offices within the club, Huntington Kennel Club, Beckley West Virginia Kennel Club, show chair along with other offices with in the club, Oak Ridge Kennel Club, Tennessee Valley Kennel Club offices within the club.  I was a member of Borzoi Club of America, Mid-West Borzoi Club, Sm Fox Ter Club of America, PBGV Club of America, Belgian Tervuren Club of America, National Miniature Dachshund Club.

My husband and I are self employed in real estate development. 

 

Sunday May 13th

Jan Swayze Curry had the good fortune to have been born into an avid dog show family. Longlesson was started in the late 40’s by her Grandmother Margaret Van Hook and Her two daughter’s Judy and Peggy. They bred standard smooth dachshunds starting in the 1940’s and then they added Afghan hounds in the early 1950’s. Longlesson has bred 50+ afghan champions, many of which have also been field and obedience titled.

At 6 years old, Jan was given her first show dog, the Italian greyhound Ch Kirklea Longlesson Bel Canto. She helped pilot her to a top 10 IG in 1961. A few years later, Jan was given her first whippet to show, Ch Kirklea Flight Pattern.

Jan’s family became a part of the Atlanta Kennel club in the 1940’s which is where they met many that would be influential in the development of their breeding programs. Such as Cora Miller(Hound Hill), James Gray(Elysian) and Larry Shaw(Kirklea) which led them to Whippets which were added in 1968. With her parents Louis and Peggy Swayze, Husband Steve Curry and two children Grahm Swayze and Louis Pence, somewhere in the neighborhood of 100 whippet champions have been bred by Longlesson.

Jan has handled many of the top whippets over the last 40 years. She has won the whippet national twice, and many specialty shows. Longlesson strives to produce dual purposed, correct hounds which is evidenced by the combination of both conformation and field titles of the dogs they produce. Jan and Steve have both been lure coursing judges for the past 30 years and active coursing their own hounds. Most recently, they have also added Pharaoh hounds into their fray, having just co-bred a litter with Thom and Pam Haig of Mia Pharaoh’s which has turned out 6 champions, 3 group winners and 3 dual champions.

ENTRY FEES:
– SMART Whippet  members: $15 first dog, $10 each additional
– Non-Members: $20 first dog, $12 each additional,
– Day of race entries $25

PRE-Entries must be received by Wednesday, May 31st  for the June 3rd and 4th meet

All dogs must be pre-registered with CWA to enter.  Dogs must be box trained before being allowed to enter.  
This is for the safety of the dog and for the dogs running with them.
Practice proofing and practice for new dogs wanting to run this weekend will be held Friday afternoon as time permits.
This is no guarantee that your dog will get to practice nor is it a guarantee that they will run.

March Meet in the books!

SMART had our first meet of 2018 on March 17th and 18th. We had the threat of severe storms and instead, we had beautiful warm sunshine(well, after a little mist in the morning) The field was in wonderful, soft, but not soggy condition.  Truly the weather couldn't have cooperated better than it did.
We completed our 3rd official meet in Tennessee! Thanks to all for a successful weekend. A highlight of Saturday was the wonderful Holy Smokin' BBQ food truck that came. So delicious and made lunch so easy to deal with! 


Saturday was a little rough due to weather and some equipment issues but everyone was patient, thank you! It really takes a willing village to pull these off, and that’s what showed up. 
Congratulations to our meet winner for both days, Mudbug!  With 10 A racers in the meet there was a lot of completion for the top spot, but he held it!
Congratulations to all our point winners this weekend: Mudbug, Pogue, Red, Remy, Torino, Batman, Vito, Clyde, Bonnie, Oak and Cherish! 
Congratulations to our Conformation winners, Horton on Saturday owned by Cathy Williams, Weston on Sunday owned by Peggy Hodge! Both are beautiful dogs. 
Congratulations to our High and Combined Winners, Oak on Saturday and Brooks owned by Cindy Parsons Hatcher! 
Thank you to our fabulous match judges Eddie Kominek and Sharron Lane! They did a wonderful job judging for us

We are thankful to all who came to help, run and watch. We could not do this without all that participate. Here is to many more meets in East TN!

This meet will be dedicated to the memory of Ellen Feldheim.

We will have an annual spirit award in her honor

The Spirit award will be done through a drawing.  We thought this would be better than a winners award so everyone had a chance to receive it. Let’s be honest there are those of us that will never have a meet winner. 

Ellen was a huge part of getting SMART started and she’s going to be very very missed by all of us. Our meets will never be the same without her so the best we can do is honor her memory.

Please join us on November 11 & 12. We have great conformation judges for the match and great prizes.  Of course best of all, the fun and comradery.

Box training available on Friday afternoon before the meet or contact one of us about possibly this coming weekend for practice at the Brown’s farm. We will try to accommodate everyone.

In the mid 1970’s, I purchased my first Afghan Hound. Unfortunately, he was not show quality. I, however, was soon introduced to Tom Kirstein, and we instantly became friends spending many hours discussing the breed standard and dog shows in general. A few months later, I met Mary Lou and Norman Benjamin of Shikari hounds. From them, I purchased my first show dog and bitch. From my first litter, I produced four AKC champions and truly became hooked on both the breed and dog shows. Tom, who also had whippets, introduced me to Dianne Bleecker and Cal Perry. I begin to selectively show for Dianne and obtained championship titles on several of her whippets. Dianne was a great mentor for me! From this point on, I developed an everlasting love for both breeds finishing numerous AKC champions. Professionally, I own a catering business that has too often taken me away from the show ring. My future plans are to retire in the immediate future and pursue what I truly enjoy in life–breeding and showing my beloved hounds!

Chris Durance Watkins 

My passion for dogs began in 1983, when I was only 12 years. My first breed was Afghan Hounds and Greyhounds. While lure coursing one day I fell in love with whippets. My first whippet was Ch. Shaman Sherry on Ice, CGC, LCM. Sherry won BOB at an AWC supported (Midwest Specialty) entry defeating over 200 whippets. She went on that day to win the Group defeating the top hounds in the county at one of the largest shows in the country, at the time. She went on to place in the Top 10 in both show and lure coursing. From there I was HOOKED . . . for my sixteenth birthday, Dr. James R. Gray of Elysian whippets gave me a silly red brindle puppy, named Perry. NSBIS & Multi SBIS Ch. Elysian A-Few Perrier, LCM, CGC, ROMX. Perry became one of the top Specialty winning whippets of his time. Then I was honored to be given Thelma, 2x NSBIS, 4x SBIS Ch Whippletrees Icy Affire, FCh, JC, ROM. She broke the record for the top number of AWC regional specialty wins (which has since been broken) and became the first whippet to win back-to-back National SBIS, the first being from the classes. From our foundation dogs Cherche’ produced the 1988 Futurity Winner, Ch. Cherche’ Touch Me, FCh., SBIS & National BOS Ch. Innenduo’s Peaches and Cream, Fch and 2x SBIS, NBOS Ch. Cherche’s Wizard of the Wind (the first 2x SBIS winning black whippet), and AWC Supported (Southern Specialty ) winning Ch. Cherche’ The Memory Remains, JC , SBIS Ch. Hycks Hollow Heart n Soul, Top 20 and Peoples choice winner GCH Cherche’ Bearfoot Hooker, her son AWC Futurity and SBIS GCH Cherche’ Walk on the Wildside and her, daughter AWC National WB, and SBIS DC Cherche’ Arborlea Something’s Afoot, MC.
In October 2006, I married my soul mate, David Watkins, who enjoys the dogs as much as I and enjoys hanging out with us crazy dog people. In 2010, a group of us created Georgia Rag Racing. Another straight racing group who share the same passion as SMART. Thank you for allowing me to judge your CWA match.

We are so looking forward to having a great turnout for June!  There will be breakfast items and lunch on the field. Please enter early so we can be prepared. We are still getting the hang of running a meet. The earlier you enter, the better we will do.  

Please bring shade!! EZ ups are a must at this site. There is no natural shade available.  This site does not allow for motorhomes. There is a campground down the way, but you will need to tow a car. I realize this is a real pain, but it is a public park and these are the rules we must abide by.  We do ask everyone pick up after their dogs and themselves.  I know everyone will, but again, we are being allowed to use this space generously by the town of Louisville. 

The track is wonderful and the site is gorgeous. Please come join us!

It was a beautiful day at Beal Park with great friends, both new and old. The meet ran perfectly and all had a great time. We are ready for our real meet June 3rd and 4th!
